2003 four wins freedom fish and ski with a 5.0 and volvo out drive, runs fantastic but I noticed coming from the outdrive area there is a spray that rises about one to two foot, can't tell where it's coming from because of the large swim deck, is this normal?

Could be from a transducer for a sonar.
If you have one and there's a gap between it and the hull wrap some tape around the gap.

Betcha its your speedo pickup. If its like my '05 then the pickup tilts up. Try tilting it up and see if the issue continues.

If your boat has a tail, undoubtedly that's where its coming from. Remove the tail and it should go away. No need for one anyway.

A tail? Explain?

Initially referred to as a Whale's Tail as it is a wide plastic hootus that attaches to the Anti Ventilation plate (horizontal plate on the outdrive just above the prop whose purpose is to aid in preventing the prop from sucking air into the propwash and reducing thrust). The tail, being aft (behind) the outdrive is like a lifting arm that pushes up on the water to raise the rear of the boat for better level boat performance and faster planing (getting the boat out of the water and onto it for faster speeds).

It could be caused by your outdrive mounting height but being an Inboard/Outboard the mfgr. surely would have had that dimension correct before going into production on the model.

How about a picture....get in a saddle seat adjacent to the engine cover and shoot a picture.......while somebody else steers the boat. Grin

I was in a playful mood when I typed that. Boats have afts and sterns, but tails are usually what's on cats, dogs and horses.

I DID NOT suggest it was a Whaletail, aka, hydrofoil. The whaletail is a cheap knockoff of a Doel fin, which isn't really needed on a Volvo because the anti-ventillation plate is already huge.

Most boats have a certain amount of spray from the motor, so maybe what you have is normal. Also, the degree could be affected by the trim angle and the number of people you have in the stern of the boat.

Looking back, when I first saw reference to some contraption bolted onto the AV plate to achieve stern lift, I think Whale's Tail was the brand. Came in 2 pieces and 2 bolts per side. Getting a picture of the LU in the water while making the spray to me, would eliminate any guessing. Proof would be in the pudding as the saying goes. Grin.
