Spray lubricant for waterproofing engine?

This is a curiosity more than anything important. I've noticed a thin layer of what appears to be axle grease covering some (but not all) of the engine. For example, there is some on two of the carburetor covers, but not the third. It sort of looks like someone deliberately sprayed some lubricant on parts of the engine and got overspray on some other parts. It occurred to me that it could residual oil from past spilled fuel, or overspray from lubing moving parts, or something intended to fight water intrusion into the electrics. .... Does anyone know of a spray product routinely used by outboard mechanics that would leave a thin axle grease like residue? If it's there for a purpose, I'll just leave it. Otherwise, I might clean up some of it.

not a mechanic, but suggest clean up with Windex, mineral spirits, lacquer thinner (milder to stronger -- careful if you get to lacquer thinner). Then use a couple of coats of auto polish, or to shortcut, spray with tire black/shine (brand of your choice).

(edit: above if on the engine cowling or leg. If under the cowling, try the windex to clean and degrease, mineral spirits or lacquer thinner lightly applied with a rag for heavy grease, then can use some WD-40 to clean/shine/lube. Watch out for rubber parts if using lacquer thinner.)

There are all sorts of commercial sprays for metals that are stored outdoors and electronics protection. Iboats probably sells a marine version. Google CMC products.

When I bought my cuddy out of South Jersey Shore with a Force 125, There was a waxy coating all over under the hood. The owner told me he sprayed the entire engine block every year and indeed, there was no corrosion on it.
He also told me that WD40 would remove it. I however left it on for about 5 years with no ill effects until I sold the engine.

I use a spray on grease and just rub in the excess

A yearly light misting of WD40 is what mine gets.......if anything.

I heard that WD40 isn't any good for the HT leads?

I use white lithium spray grease for certain areas like the tilt/trim motor/ pumps/rams.....fogging oil spray is a good corrosion preventive spray for the motor parts under the cowling....then a toothbrush and a rag to clean, leaving an oily film.....

Electrical connection should have silicon dielectric grease on the inside or on the stud and nut.
