I planted my first batch of corn today which reminded me that spring is sneaking up on us really fast! Almost boating season guys (and gals)...

I know it's early to be planting corn, but I start mine indoors a few weeks before it gets put outside, so it won't have to face the weather till the first or second week of April.

Nothing will beat last year when I was harvesting pumpkins around the beginning of April. For some reason, the seeds in a pumpkin I threw out from haloween the year before sprung up from the compost pile in early January and went nuts. I still don't know why they didn't die from all the freezing.

they did not die because a compost pile puts off heat, it was warmer than the air.

That was my first thought too, but durring a couple of the frosts, the surface of the pile even froze. Maybe it's just the roots that need to keep from freezing, or maybe the roots helped channel some warmth up to the base of the vines. I don't know. Physics work differently on my property. My fiberglass resin doesn't get hot when curing, Pumpkins grow in the winter, and for some reason, fleas, ticks, and chiggars will not step foot on the property. Even when we brought home a dog from a shelter that was covered in ticks, he was tick-free in 48 hours, and we haven't seen a tick since. For the most part, I can't complain about the oddities though.

Makes me glad I am in the "Bannana Belt" of Canada. Our snow is starting to melt pretty good. Only thing that sucks is the dogs are coming in real muddy now !!! foot wiping is a must !!!!

WELL,... I don't live THAT far from Oak Ridge (home of the manhattan project), but I don't live that close either.

One thing I do know about the property is that the developer scraped off all the topsoil and sold it before building on it. Which is the main reason I have to fight so hard to keep a green lawn. I suspect that the lack of fleas and ticks may be a result of some mineral element unearthed by the developer that drives them away. The rest I can't find an explanation for.
