My 2004 9.9 has an 8 spline prop and I think the hub is spun. Can it be fixed or do I just get a new prop?

You can try a prop shop for a rebuild price, them compare cost against a new prop.

If the prop needs any repair other than the Hub, it will be cheaper just to get a new prop

It's perfect otherwise. It's either a spun hub or something is making it ventilate badly. As soon as the boat starts to plane, the motor revs way up and thrust goes away until I throttle down. Spun hub seems most likely; I have not actually proven it though, will mark it and see if it really is spun.

iboats has great prices on props. Mark and look is as you said best way to tell. If plastic/brass hub it is built to shear......maybe not built that way (built to help dealers carry fewer props to fit all applications) but it will when you need it most (opinion). Rubber inserts slip and reseat......but if you slip them too frequently, the rubber ceases to reseat properly and slips.

Just an update. I found out the prop hub was not spun, the prop was just ventilating. Doel fin and lowest trim setting solved the problem. My Zodiac dinghy is really fun to use now. It's astounding how fast 16 knots feels when you are so close to the water surface...
