1989 Mariner 150 2.5l v6 cranks a little hard sometimes(Im told this is common)Runs great at lower speeds. But with rpm @ 5500 speed is about 54mph. And engine sounds(about 5 mins apart) like its missing or fuel is lacking pressure to keep engine steady at rpm. Fuel filter is new, water seperator new, compression 130+ or- 3 all around. Help appreciated

Thanks, Wolf
Savannah GA

try squeezin' the primer bulb underway and see if
it picks back up. at idle, squeeze bulb and see if
any gas is leaking from front of carb too.
post results.

Thanks Mello, This is my first outboard, squeezed bulb no fuel from any of the 3 carbs, but its started right up. Pressure in bulb remained pretty much steady during idle and a slight rev(about 2000rpm)for a few seconds. Will try to run it tomorrow.

Thanks, Wolf

Wolfman,

Also look very closely at your fuel line connector. It should have an 'O' ring on it.

gonna guess fuel starvation. many poss. causes.
start at source of fuel and work backwards.
eg. first try a fresh/clean portable gas tank and
primer bulb.
good luck,
M.Y.

If the fuel pump has never been rebuilt...do it. The rubber components stretch, harden, and crack over time. I wouldn't expect more that 10 years out of a diaphragm fuel pump. Parts are cheap.

Re: Sputters at top end!

Hi All! Checked fuel lines and guess what, no clamps just zip ties. Put clamps on every line bought a high flow fuel filter(see thru glass type) and found 2 small fuel leaks. Fixed them. Will try to run it this afternoon. And the fuel pump seems to be working fine. I get plenty of gas. But if what I've done all ready dont fix the prob, the fuel pump will be my next item to get inspected and fixed. So far all of your help has allowed me to fix several small problems. Thanks for the help! If yer ever in Savannah, GA look me up, Ill buy ya a beer or 2.

Thanks Again,
Wolf (Rick)
