Why should I get a SS Prop? What does it really do for me?

Should I get more Experience before going with an Expensive SS Prop. Boat owner here just over a year.

Sorry for the Newbie Questions. Other than the Cool looking SS Prop, do I really need one?

SS props, typically, offer better performance. Due to SS prop design/material, they are stiffer.

AL props tend to "bend" a bit. along with with thicker blades, read-less efficient.

I don't use SS props because my rig would see little benefit. However, MANY would.

I also like the idea of wrecking a $120.00 AL prop as opposed to wrecking a $400.00 SS prop. I don't wreck either.

If you're a newbie to an area or boating. Stick with AL until your comfort level increases.

Also, SS props are a lot stronger. Stronger even than the gears in your lower unit when you hit something hard so your $400 prop might survive while your lower unit does not. Aluminum props are a nice break away point as it's the cheapest thing to replace in the event of trouble. That said I run SS as I like the extra performance.

As DJ mentions, not all boats truly benefit from SS props. It all depends on where you boat and the type of boating you do.

Soft contact can damage an AL prop, where hard contact with a SS could damage your lower unit.

As an example -- A lot of pressure is placed on a prop to push a 4,000 pound boat to 50+ mph. If you have the HP, you'll typically want the performance of SS. I hear the Apollo AL prop performs great as well.

Provide a little more information from this link http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=287818 and maybe you'll realize if you might benefit or not.

Do you NEED one? No. Aluminum will push you down the lake just fine, and that shiny steel prop is under water so it doesn't "bling out" your boat unless it's on the trailer. Will it perform better? Probably. The blades are stronger so they don't flex as much and will maintain the intended shape better....important with the torque of a V-8 which can tend to flatten out aluminum blades over time. The also are less likely to be damaged by the occasional "ding". The blades are also (usually) thinner so there is less resistance in the water....meaning you can turn the exact same SS prop a little faster than the exact same design of aluminum props....everything being equal of course (which it never is).

As for the theory that hitting an obstruction with a SS prop will break something on the drive, that's only really true if you have a solid hub (i.e. race boats). Most have some sort of hub that will "give" if you hit something; Mercury has a delrin (plastic) hub (flotorqII) that'll break waaaay before you tear up anything in the drive. Some other brands have hubs made of different materials, but they all have some give in them. Not that the potential for drive damage isn't there.....it is.....but I've seen drives torn up by hitting something even when they had an aluminum prop. With all respect to those who would disagree, I just don't see that as a selling point either way. If you hit something hard enough you'll break....no matter what flavor of prop you have.

Only you can decide if it's worth it to you. It is to me. I made the switch to stainless about 5 boats ago when I had a 16' Whaler powered by an 85 'Rude. It made a noticeable difference....enough that I never went back to aluminum. Along with the slight increase in performance, in theory you should get slightly better fuel economy.....again, all things being equal (which they never are).

The downsides are the costs; much more expensive to repair (and not just any prop shop can fix them) and they're obviously more expensive to purchase. A good quality stainless prop for your boat new will go for $300-$450, depending on the brand. Used ones (in good shape) can be found for half that....sometimes even less.

If you have a local prop shop, go talk to them. Many of them will buy/sell/trade, and even let you take it out as a "loaner" (usually for a small fee). This way you can try before you buy and make a more informed decision given your particular needs/wants.

For casual boating in most cases aluminum is just fine. And if you ever have a prop strike on a log, stump, rock, then Maybe your aluminum prop breaks and not your lower end gears. All that said, I run a SS prop and it's like new after 12 years of running, but I use my depth finder a lot and stay very aware of stumps, rocks, submerged objects, etc....Good Luck!

Re: SS Prop Why???

Thanks all for taking your time out the day to reply. Other than it looks cool on the Trailer I'm not sure If I need one for my Current boat for performance reasons. "Sig Boat"
I was just wondering what all the Bling was all about with a SS Prop. I have a Boat Prop shop that specializes in this sort of thing as this is their main business.
Maybe talk to them. Thanks for the Advise.

I think I'm to much of a newbie for this yet. If I scrap my ss prop I will shoot myself. Maybe I should just invest in a better boat stereo system instead.

Also I keep my boat in a Storage PLace and I would fear that my prop will get stolen. I think there are prop locks for this.

Anyway thanks.

There are, but like most security devices they can be defeated and mainly are there "to keep honest people honest". If you're worried about it, remove the prop and take it with you....takes just a few seconds.

Re: SS Prop Why???

I trashed my alum prop in 10 min, barely bumped the bottom Sense then have been runnin' SS, for 18 yrs, on the rivers, Mississippi, St Croix and Minnesota. Debris city, Hit stuff all the time, drive still good. Prop has dings, but ok. I would have probably trashed 10 or more alums by now. I would be sure to have underwater collision insurance tho [ I do] if ya run SS.. Ive never had a claim, but Murphys Law would be in effect the second I dropped that coverage.
