It was a GREAT day on the lake. Even my wife who doesn't like boating (didn't really know this before we were married 20 years ago - go figure...) had a good time today. We get back to the ramp Charleston Park on Six Mile Creek at Lake Lanier North of Atlanta. There is only one small dock here, maybe a 15 foot front and 10 feet of 'end' on each side. The area is always crowded. There is a Ranger fishing boat with 2 couples. The men tie up the boat - probably 18' that they tie to the front side extending beyond both ends of the dock, rendering it useless for anyone else. I politely asked the women if they would move their boat one way or the other so we could get to an end. They started moving the boat. The women were clueless. They were untying and about to start the boat. I told them they didn't need to start it just pull it a couple of feet - would be very helpful. They ended up not just scooting up but moving to the end. i don't think they meant to - they just sort of lost control and ended up there.

I docked on the front and RAN to get my car for loading. I put the trailer in position and RAN back to jump in the boat to drive on. My wife pulled me up the ramp and here is this car/trailer/boat that blocked the one lane driveway at the exit while they took forever putting away their gear. Eventually about 10 minutes later they decided they were done and would leave. I was quite frustrated! I told my wife (form the boat)to do the right & courteous thing and lets just wait until they were done so we could pull forward to the right location to deal with our gear. We did exactly that. When my wife got out of the car she told me that those were the same people in that same Ranger fshing boat. I didnt realize it. My wife did make a comment to them at the dock that this was a public area and not theirs for their use only. The people in the Ranger told them this is how they did it and they had been doing it this way for years, etc, etc. She told me also that when the 'men' came down and saw their boat was moved that they lit into her twice. I only wish I had known - but it is probably better that I didn't. Two other boats were able to dock because they moved theirs and some other people told my wife that they knew she was right.

I just can't believe what inconsiderate selfish jerks these people were. I hope they read this and think about it. Ending and otherwise great day on such a sour note just irks me.

Man where have you been??:D Ignorant people are EEEEvery where!! at the dock, on the water, at the marina's etc... It's the cool people on the water that we have fun with, the ignorant dumn a@@es tend to stay away from me for some reason, I don't know why?? But I don't let them ruin my day and it doesn't ruin my opinion of the good ones out there who are really cool and nice to talk to. I feel sorry for anyone who talked to my wife that way, I would just stand back with a big smile on my face and say to them "Your the dumn a@@ES that started it, You deal with her:D

A skunk is a skunk and jerks are jerks...don't look for either to change. When I encounter folks like that, I get my rig loaded and come back with a camera and make sure I get some pix...when they ask what's up I let 'em know their pix, with boat numbers, will go to the park/ramp authority for a lesson in rules of the road.

Launching and retrieving is the worst.. On the water, you can (usually) motor away from them, but at the docks, ***-hattery is all but unavoidable. I'm not even talking about people being noobs & taking a bit too long, I don't mind that... Its the flat out inconsideration & people being d$%^s.

It's gotten to the point that I don't go out on weekends anymore.. If I want to hit the waterway, I take a day or an afternoon and do it during the week. Lot of that probably has to do with living in CA though... Severely overpopulated.

Re: *ss****s at the ramp today

I am still fairly new to boating, and even more so to public launches, trying to get that boat trailer in there just right and then trying to get it to roll off(thinking of building bunks to replace the rollers). I try and just let everyone go ahead of me. I also have been trying to teach my brothers how to trailer the boat and all of that, so a lot of people look at me like I'm taking forever because I have 2 guys with me, but neither one of them know anything about it so it's basically just me which means I dock the boat tie it off, and then have to run and get the truck to back the trailer in and winch it up since they banned power laoding. It's a pain and takes me a little bit It's a matter of trying to pick the least busy times of day.

Don't let the jerks get you down. My wife and I have a system, I drop her and the kids in the boat right into the lake and then go park. She tools around for a bit and then just picks me up at the dock. I never tie up as this eats up time that someone else could use at the dock. When we are ready to go in she drops me at the dock, goes back out for a few and then just drives the boat right up onto the trailer and we get outa there. This business of people tying up for any period of time is ridiculous and should be prohibited when the dock is busy. The longer you are at the dock, the higher your chance of encountering one of these dimwits.

Re: *ss****s at the ramp today

I consider myself lucky... there is a small ramp only 1 mile from my house. It's pretty shallow. 2 feet at the end of the ramp, and 3 feet as I putter out into the lake. No biggie for me.... but it seems everybody thinks the water is too low this year to use that ramp, and everybody is paying to use the city ramp.

there is no dock. Also not a problem... I gently beach it then push it out to retrieve. It takes 2 mins to launch, and 2 to crank it on...

ANYWAY .... here's the point to my story.

Twice so far this summer, I've had jackholes on the ramp. Non boaters.... Last month, I pulled up to the ramp at 8am, and there's a crappy old beaten car parked RIGHT on the ramp, halfway down it. I go up, can't find anybody... car is empty... I finally discover him, sleeping on the grass 100 feet from the car.... he was mad at me, for needing him to wake up, and move his car.... what the heck??

Last week, I pulled up to the ramp, and as I am pulling in to line up for the ramp, a minivan pulls in, and parks on the ramp... windows down, and i know he saw me, he shifts it into park. Good grief!

I honk my horn, no response, so I get out, and go approach him, he had MCDonalds takeout and was MAD that I needed him to move, unloaded some obscenities at me for needing to use the ramp...

I'm glad I don't use the public ramps, I've watched the mayhem there...

Well.....we dont all have wives that can, or legal to operate, our boats. So some of us have to tie up, get the truck, get the boat, etc. all by ourselves. My girl is working on her safety course and backing the trailer, but until then, like i have for years, somebody has to tie to the dock, and its me. i do keep it minimal, and if my buddy is with me then he gets the truck so i dont have to. but sometimes its inevitable.

hate that it ruined your day--i'm sure it would have been worse if you knew what was going down back at the dock--see if she's willing to learn to drive it on the trailer--it may help in situations like that

Re: *ss****s at the ramp today

Often, at the ramp I launch at 90% of the time, there is one small dock or whatever at the ramp and room to launch only one boat at a time, small lake and not usualy to busy. Problem is, there is usualy a group that has no boat fishing off the dock that is supposed to be used for loading/unloading boats. It's not a deal breaker but a real pain to have to ASK them to move or watch out, as usualy they stare and just dont seem to have a clue what you are trying to do, and give you the feeling that you are the one that is causing the inconvenience.
Rant over, thanks for coming:D

There are Jerks out there for sure. And there are people out there who just dont know what they are doing.I have tryed to help people before who I think are new to boating. some are greatful and say thanks. Some are like who the heck are you to tell me how to load my boat. The key is choosing not to let them put a damper on the rest of your evening. just be thankful you were raised better than that. In situations like theese I always remember what my dad always said to me.(He didnt hurt my feelings because I choose not to let him)

Re: *ss****s at the ramp today

I'm a downhill skier and I honestly didn't mind when the snow boards came along. Of course, it's a younger crowd so they can be a bit obnoxious at times, head phones on, stepping on your skis, but really try to just enjoy my days on the mountain.

The river and the ramp are the same for me. Oh, I notice the guy that's po'd cause I have to get my trailer to pull the boat, but nothing I can do about that. I had my wife and kids (3 boys) all get their certificates. So far I'm only comfortable leaving my oldest tooling around while I get the truck. My wife can steer while I'm pulling the anchor, but docking is a ways off.

My peeve if is the jet ski crowd. I don't mind that they jump my wake, I don't grumble about the nasty sounds those things make, but what I can stand is their ramp etiquette.

I primarily use two ramps, one on a small lake and one on the Connecticut River. In both case the jetski folks use the ramp like beach. There are 2-3 per jet ski and they pull right in the middle between the two docks, while boats launching and pulling, and change riders, tuck their little cars and trailers between your trucks in stead of waiting in line. They rarely know how to backup so they are always sideways blocking everyone. I know they take the same course the rest of us do...cause my certificate covers jetski's...how come they didn't learn anything?

Well, it's very obvious that they aren't too smart of an individual, or they'd of found this board, and learned something, instead of being a dumb*ss !!!!!!

I'm considering when I see someone goofing up at the ramp to hand them a piece of paper with this web-site on it, so they will learn. The problem is, I'm afraid that there'd be a bunch of problem makers here if I do.

I didn't know I was a dimwit...since I tie down my boat to get my truck - both when I am solo and with the wife & kids.

I don't think anyone called people that tie up dimwits.
I tie up when solo, and let my wife hold the lines while I park when she's with me.

We are faster than 90% of the people at the ramp, mostly due to reading here.

I doubt they will read this as they probably aren't members here. If they were, they would have known better.

The suggestion above about handing out a piece of paper with this website address on it is a good one. I might actually try it someday (in a friendly and diplomatic way, of course).

Re: *ss****s at the ramp today

I find myself becoming impatient just reading these posts.

So I think its better to just let people be people, they reserve the right to be wrong and if I can't tolerate that, thats my problem.
All this huffing and puffing never got me anywhere.
I could get 100 people to agree with me and still be wrong and think I'm right.
