Stabalizer and ethanol in gas in 9.9 HP Evinrude

I did a hitch-hike with this on another thread, but decided while here on the forum I'd ask again.

I have read, maybe here, that ethanol in gasoline, 10% assumed here in NJ, can damage (or shorten the life of) small 2 cycle outboard engines. Further, a neighbor told me yesterday that adding (forget which color) stabilizer to the gas will mitigate the ill-effects of the ethanol. He further said Homedepot carries both colors of stabilizer, I'll ask him again for which color.

Anyone on this Board have the right answer to dealing with E10 gasoline in my 1997 9.9 HP EVinrude?

Thanks

A lot of marinas are now selling 0% ethanol fuel. There are four near me and several regular gas stations as well.

The stabil marine is blue, doesnt do anything with ethanol.Look or search ethanol on the site there's lots about it.I dont personally burn it in any of my small engines!! alcohol attracts water water and engines especially 2 stroke dont work together.

I use either the Blue Stabil or Startron and haven't had any problems.

if I knew how to easily post a picture, I'd show you a glass jar of gasohol that sat for only 3 months and showed phase separation. Plenty of proof for me no matter what the experts say. You really don't want that water-ethanol layering out separately from the gas. I get plain non-ethanol gas from my marina for use in my boat, mowers, chain saws, trimmers, anything that might sit unused for 3 months.

And I've done the same tests twice over two six month periods with not a hint of phase separation. One test ran from spring to fall and other over one of our midwest winters. Upload your pictures to Photobucket.com. Then copy the link and paste it in your message. The picture will appear.

Question. Did you have the glass jar sealed or was it exposed to the air?? There's a reason for the question. There's a lot of moisture down here in SW FL.

tightly sealed glass jar, stored indoors Sept-Oct-Nov last year. You can see phase separation. Third pic shows cloudy milkshake after shaking it.
I have a current jar doing same test, now going 6 months, and look fine. From two different Exxons. May depend on tanks of where I bought them, but that is a problem that only gasohol seems to stir up.

If your test is in a sealed jar, any moisture that you see was in the fuel "before" you put it in the jar. Moisture can't get into the jar when it is sealed. I've seen much more water than that in regular gasoline and AV gas drained from an airplane that has sat for a few weeks.

I've got some ethanol in a sealed jar that I purchased 4 months ago and it looks just like the day I bought it. Boat fuel tanks are vented and you can get moisture in them.

that's exactly the problem. If the Exxon tank is contaminated with water (they all are, to varying degrees) and gasohol absorbs this, takes it to your boat tank (or the glass jar), then upon sitting it layers out and creates a problem. Without gasohol, what would have happened to that water contaminant?

Does it just sit there on the bottom of the tank and rather than an emulsion with ethanol does it just get swirled around and microdroplets go out with the gas to be ingested by engine, hopefully without a hiccup?
