Hi all I'm new to this forum.
I have a 1968 glasscraft 15ft with a 40hp evinrude lark electro shift .
Took it out for its maiden voyage and noted it was very tender.
Has anyone tried installing some sponsons on this type of hull to improve its stability at rest?

Re: Stability issues

Hi Gus, older smaller boats are narrow and can seem a bit unstable to some when moving around. So tell me is this your first boat? Just wondering what experience your basing the "very tender" opinion on.

Sea nymph
Yes I agree the old girl has a skinny bum that's why she is a bit tender
I was thinking of grafting some sponsons on to give it some beam to add a bit of stability at rest.
In relation to my experience to stability I've only had 3 boats of my own a clinker ski boat 18 ft a 23 wellcraft nova spider and this one
I will post some pics when I get to work.
Ps the wellcraft was a truly tender deep vee hull too much v for its own good
Tender at rest and dangerous at transition the only time it was good was into swell.

OMG really? You want to mess up her lines? Wow... no way Gus don't do it, she is a sexy little thang just like she is!

I say learn to live with her instability. After all that's why boats are called "shes".

Re: Stability issues

She probably is tender due to initial roll, but then reaches the mid point of topsides which appears wider than bottom...."rocker panel" ..... That's added by the profile of the lapstrakes.....i would think it should be stable at that point? I agree with Waterman.... she's got sweet lines!

Re: Stability issues

Guys
No I don't really want to mess up her looks
What I'm in the process of doing is making up some sponsons out of surf board foam that I will get glassed in the right colour,
I will make them up so they can be bolted on
For those days when I need them ( kids fishing days)
Or remove them when I want.
The sponsons I've made look kinda funky
And only fit on 1 chine so only come into effect when the boat is sitting and not planing
I will post some pics when I've finished,
The other option was to build a small swim platform out of foam and glass that
I think this is the best option and removable as well .
