I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this but... I've noticed these stabilizers that usually attach to the upper gear housing fins of the lower unit. Are they worth it? Will they improve performance on a 15 ft runabout. Do they put any kind of extra stress on the engine. The one I saw at Cabellas was under $35

Yes, the Doelfins will improve holeshot on almost any Boat, but you may loose a few MPH on the top end. But overall, well worth it! You can plane at a much lower speed, also. They do put some stress on the Cavitation plate. Might even break part of it. But that's the chance you take for preformance!

Do a search for "hydrofoil". You'll find quite a bit of info to answer your questions. But first, ask yourself why you need one. Does your boat have a hard time getting on plane, or would you like it to plane at a slightly lower speed? Have you experimented with your trim adjustment? Have you optimized your prop for the particular way you use your boat?

They do work when you need them. But remember, you're going to be drilling holes in your cavitation plate, so exhaust all other remedies first.

Thanks guys. After reading your replies, I am going to go with putting the fuel tank up front and try that before I even think about hydrofoil
