Re: stabilizer fin

If you're speaking of the Trim Tab that is bolted to the lower unit just above the propeller...... Yes, it's a needed item. Without it the engine will torque in one direction and be extremely hard steering.

well if thats the thing that looks like a wing that goes across the back of the leg and is bolted to the leg by 2 bolts on each side of leg , then ok, thanks

What you describe here sounds like a hydrofoil/Whaletail.If that's the case,is there one on there now or just the empty holes where one was bolted. The trim tab that Joe speaks of is a round disc with a 2 to 3 inch fin that sticks down just above the propeller. There is a single bolt in the middle of the disc that retains it and allows for side to side adjustments when loosened and retightened.

The hydrofoil is something you don't need.

Re: stabilizer fin

I once had a job as a ski boat driver, and the owner installed one of those fins to increase performance; the effect was just the opposite; ever since then, I never saw the use of them. In my opinion, if the hydrofoil really is an asset, the manufacturers would build the lower units with the hydrofoil already there.
