i plan to fabricate a 16 gallon SS gas tank for my boat. It will be mounted underneath the floor in the bow of my Thunderbird Seminole. It will have proper venting and fill piping. I plan to cushion the tank mounts to avoid the problem of vibration with SS. Does anyone have any comments on this project.

I have the material on hand and weight is not a problem. I believe that SS will be better with the ethanol blended gasoline we are being forced to us today.

I don't know about making your own, but my boat came with a SS gas tank. It is 33 years old and in perfect shape. SS is a good material for the tank.

SST is a great choice for tank construction - particularly if it's of the 316 or 316L variety. Everything that I've read about ethanol suggests that aluminun is fine up to 10%, but becomes problematic at 15% and above. I had a pair of custom 12 gallon aluminum tanks made prior to all this ethanol business. Even though most of the gas around here is only 10% ethanol (or so they say) I still wish I would have gone with SST.

Stainless is prone to crevice corrosion if keep in moist surroundings. You?ll also have an issue if you don?t passivite the tanks after fabrication. Ever see the ?rust? strains leaching out from under Stainless fittings?

Add in a little stray current from the sending unit and Houston?..we have a problem.

I'm not sure what they did to mine, but after 33 years it's fine.
