92 Bayliner Capri with Mercruiser 5.0 with Alpha One Gen II. Replaced all lower seals in drive, got the cap on top of the drive to stop leaking water, no more drive oil leaking from intake holes in drive, new cap, rotor, and plugs, and water/fuel separator. Went out today and for the first time since I've owned it I throttled up shortly after leaving the ramp and she went and went and at good speed. After about 20 minutes it started slowing down and then cutting out. I turned around to head back to the ramp and it got worse and worse as I got closer to the ramp. The closer I got the more it stalled and the more I had to restart it and coasted in at minimal speed. Any ideas???

I don't know if this helps or not, but I just hooked it up to the hose and it started right up but as soon as I reved it up in neutral I could here the carb make a sucking sound and then it would die, and it would do it every time I tried

check for a bad base gasket on the carb, the sucking sound sounds like a vaccum leak... old carbs are a major pain, i can't wait until theres not one carb left on this entire planet!!!

You will be waiting a long time, since they have been manufactured by the millions for the last 100 years...there are still a few out there!

Eric, I have lots of ideas. In fact, a list of possible causes.

Low battery voltage or intermittent charging system failure. Overheated/faulty coil. Overheated/faulty ECM (Thunderbolt Ignition module) A host of fuel delivery issues, beginning with clogged jets, bad metering valve, bad accelerator plunger, contaminated fuel filters, failing fuel pump, vapor lock, bad floats, loose idle speed screws, etc. etc. We need more information. Are you running the correct AC Delco MR43T plugs? Did you replace the plug wires with a quality set? Heat plays havoc on electrical continuity. Wires are a prime source of intermittent miss running conditions when they get hot.

I actually have not replaced the wires yet but I will. As for the plugs I did not get those exact ones but the ones they told me were the same, I think NPG? According to my meter the battery is strong and at 14 when running. My gut tells me it is a carb issue, but I definitelty want to get those wires changed too. I am not sure how to test the coil but I guess i can look that up. It just really sucked because it finally started off so well when i went out yesterday then once again it all went to hell in a hand basket.
