Bad lower shift cable, when was it replaced last?
propeller tied to lower unit preventing it from turning?should also stall in reverse.
The stalling if caused by activating the shift interlock switch is a sign of the cable binding, corrosion , etc.Remove the drive and the cable at the connector inside the boat and try moving with JUST 2 FINGERS, should be free and easy.

Prop turns when engaged but motor dies under throttle

Re: stalling going in to forward gear

first you said "dies" now it`s when you apply throttle????????
like it just shuts off electrically or like starving for fuel?
Accelerator pump in carb, restricted fuel delivery, fuel filter clogged up,

I think like BT said shift cable .
Will the engine rev in neutral ? If so lower shift cable.

bolick - we now have two competing theories, you need to be very specific about the sequence of events.
