Stalling Problem

I have a 1976 evinrude 115. I have had the carbs gone through two times, changed fuel line and primer bulb. The comperssion is 98 in two of the cylinders and 102 in the other two. The Powerhead has been bored and rebuilt and has only a couple of hours on it. The shop says it sounds to be a little piston slap and tells me it must just be wore out.....But the comperssion tells me diffrently. When I first start the motor it runs fine 5500 rpm wot on the lake, Once I let off and try to start back it stalls. If I raise the rpm with the start throttle and clear the carbs it will finally take off and gain speed quickly. I can also push in on my key to choke it and it will eventually power up. Is it possible that one of my carbs have a problem and needs to be replaced. I have also recently rebuilt the fuel pump. HELP!!! Thanks

Carbs seldom have to be replaced. Your symptoms do point to crud in the carbs.

Your compression is just fine. I suspect that your shop is seeing $$$ in a rebuild. Their bank account likes that.

Re: Stalling Problem

I don't think it is a carb problem, fireman.

Sounds to me like a fuel supply problem. Look for restriction/air leak in vent, pickup tube and anti-siphon valve assembly. Better yet, try a fresh tank of fresh fuel.

When my son had the same symptoms we found a fuel line pinched by a bilge pump cover.

I am gonna try a portable tank and see if that will work. I have had the carbs rebuilt two times plus once by me. I soaked them in a gallon can of carb cleaner for 12 hours or better then blew them out with comperssed air.

Re: Stalling Problem

I currently have a very similar problem on a 1999 115. When you are in gear or neutral it runs great but when you try to accelerate from idle in gear it bogs and dies although once you get past somewhere around 1500-2000 rpm it is fine. I found that pushing in the key a few times while accelerating allows you to get going by giving extra fuel to the engine. Of course it gets plenty of fuel to run at all higher rpm but just not when coming from a stop at lower rpms. Let us know what you find
