Help! My first boat, 1987 Bayliner Capri with the Force 85 motor. My grandson and I put it in the water today. The engine starts and idles fine. Tried to give it a little gas and it stalled with a kind of clanking noise and vibration. We tried it several times both forward and reverse with the same result. Any ideas why this is happening. I would appreciate any help I can get.

Re: Stalling

... hmm sorry to hear the trip with gk didn't go so well. whats the history of the o/b? i'd pull the plugs and see how they look, fouling, water, etc. also have your carbs been cleaned out? how about fuel delivery, primer bulb all good, diaphram been changed out? fuel fresh, oil mix good? check those things out before making larger leaps.

good luck

Make sure you snap it in gear and give it plenty of throttle when shifting. I know it may be counter intuitive to someone new to these motors, but if you are easing in slowly into the gear it will make all kinds of clunking noises as the gearbox is grinding gears. It will likely stall since the motor won't have enough RPMs to turn over once the prop is engaged. So make sure when changing in to gear do it in a quick smooth motion on a throttle stick. Once the motor is in gear and is starting to rev-up, ease off on throttle back to 800RPMs or whatever your idle speed is.
