I have a 1980 Starcraft Super Sport 160 with an Evinrude 60HP outboard, and I've just recently found that their are some soft spots in the transom. The thing is not about to fall off, but the hull caulking where the transom meets the aluminum bulkhead inside is starting to pull away, and is taking wood with it, just little slivers. The entire exterior of the transom is covered by aluminum and there are LOTS of rivets holding it together. Only the inner part of the transome is painted plywood. It seems that it would not be practical to replace it. Is there anyway to fix this, or is it time to cut it up? I have already replaced the center section of floor when I got this thing last year. It was pretty leaky and I stripped resealed and painted the bottom last year.

Re: Starcraft rotting transom repair

Of all the wood in your boat, that is pretty much the most important. There is a lot of torque applied there and it would probably be in your best interest to replace it. From the sounds of it, it is only a small section where the mounting boats are, that is way easier to replace then say, a whole transom! So that is good news! Always want everything sealed up real nice, the joints and the mounting hardware with some silicone or even 4200.
