Ayuh,....

Those Seats Do in fact hold the hull in shape...

If you Raise the decking,+ add pedestal seats,...
You'll be also Raising the Center of Gravity,+ Probably end up with a Very Tippy, Unsafe, Unusable boat....

totally agree, raising the deck would make it extremely unsteady and unsafe. boats with raised decks are usually 6 to 8 feet wide.

Re: starcraft seafarer

I was given a 1970 Starcraft Seafarer 14' aluminum....Thanks for the help,

That is about like my first boat, an aluminum 14' Sea King. I car-topped it which was difficult.

I now have a 14' MFG Niagara, which is fiberglass, about 65" beam, 26" floor to gunwales, 16 pedestal seats with swivels, and has a closed bow. Two adults can stand at the same gunwale (like when netting a fish for someone) and although it tips, it is not at risk of flipping or taking on water.

If you want a casting deck or pedestal seats, I would suggest finding a different boat- something like mine. Best thing I did.

You can find these 70s and 60s for low money especially this time of the year. I paid $330 for mine with a motor, which was about what it was worth! It's much cleaner and nicely laid out now, and it runs well with an '85 Suzuki. (Sold the ol' Johnson for $225 and got the Suzy for $500) They are low draft and cheap to power. Another user has a nice picture of one like what I am talking about, but you don't have to find an MFG- there were other brand names that made good fiberglass and aluminum boats. Here is a link to a pict of what I am suggesting (EDIT: link went to Mark 42 profile. TD)

Hope this helps make your decision easier.

I can see that. Oh well ... I'll clean up the benches and redo the low ply-wood decking -- it runs just across the top of the ribs, not an inch off the hull ...

Thanks for the help guys,
