Nice looking boat, congrats.

Give it a good going over & the water test you mentioned in your 1st post before you finish buying it.

The water level at the transom & IN the splashwell are concerning, but I'd bet the owner back it in the water far enough to get the motor submerged & ran it while the boat was still tied down to the trailer. ANd the splashwell filled with water from water flowing IN the well's drains instead of out of them, since the water on both side of the transom appears to be at the same level on the transom...

Or he's got the worlds largest OB test tank

Looking back again, it looks like the transom cap under the motor hooks is fairly twisted out of shape, that should be looked at really closely, and make sure you know if there is ANY flex in the transom when you lift against the lower unit of the OB......

so I talk to the seller today and he is giving me the runaround about putting the boat in the water and giving it see trials just to make sure it runs well. That seems to have put me off seriously I'm getting this boat. What anybody consider buying a boat without putting it in the water good deal or not. More to come.

Depends on what you're paying, and whether you are expecting a water ready boat or a project. Many are bought as water ready, but are actually projects....

A tank test can be a more reliable test then muffs on some outboards.

Many sellers don't want to hassle w/ the effort involved in a sea trial. Perhaps you've given him a deposit towards a set purchase price & another buyer is countering higher. If he can sell it to someone else & not fool w/ the Vermont registration or a sea trial, at the same price you've settled on, or for more then you've agreed to, many will try to back out of a non-binding commitment. Hopefully you have something that says you've given him a deposit, so you can get your money back.

If the stall & run around are off putting, you need to decide whether it's worth wading into, esp if you think it's likely not going to be your boat. And let it go, there will be others, perhaps more or less water ready, and maybe not until later in the spring......

If it's worth the trouble to you to move forward, do so knowing that it is now unlikely to be as water ready as you were lead to believe.

Is the non-water ready boat worth what you've agreed to pay?

Having bought both boats & trailers w/ & w/out titles, I have generally gotten good vibes from all the sellers, and no run around. And never has the deal changed once after we reached an agreement. So I have no qualms about the boats or trailers, and have been able to get them all titled to me in WV. Some required more effort then others.

But I am comfortable w/ what I bought, their condition, who I bought them from, what I paid & if I wasn't comfortable, I'd have backed away. Even for an untitled 18' Holiday in need of a complete gut & resto (including it's trailer, also no title) w/a good compression Merc 1100, for the $250 I paid.

Thanks for the bit of advice. I went and looked at the boat today and looked over it over alot better. It's pretty rough. I'm really looking for something I can get in the water this year. The floors in the front are very soft and saggy. The seatsare all destroyed. There is a small soft spot in the rear. All the trim vinyl is rough. I would be all up for doing a total restoration project. I have the skills and the time but I work full time and I live in an apartment complex and think it would cause some issues here with total renowned a boat in their parking lot.
The boat was on the trailer in the motor running pic. But I bet it would be pretty full of water to sit that low in the drink.
I know all you tin nuts are wanting to see some tore up pics of this beast.

If the price is right.....I'd go for it. Getting the boat water ready wont take long. You can always just replace the floor and transom.....and save any/all cosmetic stuff for another time.

Check out my resto(in my sig) I gutted my boat and had her on the water in like 2 weeks. I'm doing more improvements along the way.

Knowing what is possible w/ a given boat & your circumstances (living in an apartment complex makes resto work tough) is important.

Is it a little voice in your head saying No because of the seller's last minute run around? <<--This could be a deal breaker for sure. If the paperwork isn't already in order, there may be a reason...... Like I said earlier, if I'd gotten any bad vibes from a seller, I'd back away no matter the 'deal'.... It might even be something that just nags at you for days/weeks while you try to sort out the paperwork. And may not be worth it, depending on what you've agreed to pay.....


As Bonair said, some aluminum boat work can be done fairly quickly, IF there's somewhere to store parts & pieces out of the boat. And you can get rid of debris as you tear it apart.

W/ a Sat/Sun of good weather, you could probably get the bulk of the teardown done, if you don't make a huge mess in the parking lot & put a cover over the hull, the apartment mgmt may not complain. Unless you only get 1 parking place, or you aren't allowed to have a boat in their lot.

None of that matters if you are uncomfortable w/ the seller. This can be looked at as a learning exercise, and helps you form a better idea of what you WANT (sounds like water ready is very important), what you're looking to pay, and signs to look for that the seller is or isn't on the up & up.

Sorry this one may not get hitched up to your wagon. There will be others.... Water ready (if they really are...) boats may get more expensive as the weather improves.

Might try a WANTED ad in the CL's near you. Someone has a 19-21' SC wanted w/in 500mi of Aiden, NY ad. It's been running for a couple months......

That says it all, Rich. I think she's a tough apartment parking lot re-do. Also, the seller is giving you the paperwork run-around, to boot. The right one is out there waiting to be found.

The best way to do a restoration if you live in an apartment is to rent a garage type storage unit and do the resto there. Several members have done this and had good results, mainly in the winter to get inside and out of the cold.

really nice restoration thread I can't believe you got it that boat floor Trans Am and all and how to replace in like a week great job. I bet I could pull it off to. The seller has totally spoke to me though he seems a bit shady tried to call him today but never heard back.

How much does he want for it? I paid $1000 for mine with an untested '81 Evinrude 90 (with TnT) and a nice trailer. I figured at that price, even if the motor was shot I could still part it and not get too hurt. Plus it was exactly the hull I was looking for. If you just paint the new wood, this boat can be restored in a couple weekends even in a parking lot. The most time consuming part of my rebuild was epoxying all the pieces multiple coats. Buddy and I recently did a Starcraft transom project in one weekend.

I paid $900 for mine and it was in MUCH much worse shape. Tennessee is MUCH easier on paperwork though if you can't get the right paperwork you should definetly walk. Life is all about the paperwork it isn't what you know it is what you can prove.

He was asking 2500 for the boat but I talked him down to 1900 but I think I'll keep looking for a boat that fits me.

Unless you live in an area where Tin boats go for a premium.....I'd pass on this boat. By the time you finished restoring it, you'd have $4k+ into it.

Ez I'm in albany. I looked at another starcraft ss 1983 the engine was rebuilt and haven't been tested. This boat was mint. 3000
