Hi I have a 1969 55HP Evinrude and I have been trying to get it going. At the present moment when I try to get it to start it will Start for a 1min and than will stop and I have to let it sit for a bit than it will do the same thing. I have taken off the Carbs and cleaned them up and after I put them back on it ran for 3min this time and I could not get it going again. Any Ideas.??

Are you using fresh fuel or older fuel? Can you touch the powerhead under the cowl after it dies, or is it too hot? If it was bad fuel, you probably wouldn't even get it to start... So perhaps it's overheating?

The Gas is 1 year old so I think I am going to try to change it...I don't think it would be overheating it does not run for long enough... I have also replaced the spark Plugs...but I am thinking I am going to replace the gas...And see how that goes...Thanks..any other things to try out ther..??

Another possibility might be a bad fuel pump diaphragm... Is This the type you have? It's worth an inspection if you haven't done it anyway.

Re: Start/Stop Evinrude

it could be hot ck water output at weap tube /some call them pi--er. sounds like fuel to me if that yr has bowl/fliter ck for air leaks . try and see if it will stay running if you pump fuel bulb /or if it sucks bulb closed /floats may be cloded not letting fuel in at a good rate of flow   :p

Thanks for all the suggestions. That does look like my fuel pump. in the parts it looks like it has a screen. Might just take that pump apart to see if it is all gummed up. The motor has been sitting for around 7 years +. I am going to change the gas this weekend also take off the carb's again and clean them also check the fuel pump and I'll let you guys know how it goes thanks for the help. :D

Just for grins, have you felt the cylinder head to rule out high temperature from a lean mixture, blocked water passage, etc. ?

You could open the carb drain plugs after it dies to verify that there is fuel in the carb. That should rule out the fuel delivery, no?

What about the choke? Suppose the motor starts warming up and the choke (if it's automatic) moves into a position that kills the motor until it cools off again.

Do you still have spark after it dies? (You never know...)
