Start-up Issue

I just purchased a 1990 bayliner that has a 72-74 Evinrude 65hp 2-stroke. It has spark on all 3 lines, with just replaced and gapped sparkplugs, the flywheel is being turned by the starter, and it has fuel, but I'm not getting any ignition fire what so ever. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Does it sound like a junker or a re-build???

I don't know but if that is one of the ones with the amplifier it could be that. I think in those years they had a power pack. I'd get the manual out and start chasing down the wiring.

I looked at the shop manual and it calls for a neon tester to test the power pack,which this model does have. Where can you get these neon testers??

You say you are getting spark on all 3 "Lines", but then say there is no ignition fire. Could you explain a bit further as this is a bit confusing. Have you done a spark test?

I guess I read too fast Rick as I didn't catch that. If you are getting spark on all three cylinders then you are either not getting fuel or you have low compression and it won't fire. Squirt some premix from a spray bottle in the carbs and see if it will fire. If it fires then you are not getting fuel through the carbs. I would do a compression check anyway to make known what you have.

Or the engine is not spinning fast enough due to a dragging starter, a weak battery. or corroded battery cable connections.

i agree with silvertip,

you need at least 300 rpms with the plugs in to get enough voltage output from the stator.
the faster you turn the engine over the more volts are produced by the stator.

check for spark with a spark tester with plugs out and with plugs in. notice any difference? it should jump a 7/16 gap.
bleu crispy spark.

check this:

fully charged battery?
starter ok?
all cables and grounds ok?
loose, broken, weak magnets in flywheel?

How do I test the starter?? It is moving the flywheel, but only a1/2 turn per crank. I replaced the battery with a new one and cleaned all the connections, but no change in performance.

the starter should spin that engine with ease. check your cable for swollen spots, or knicks of cuts. the deteriorate from the inside. take a jumper cable ground the engine to the battery, then take from positive post to the big post on the starter. this will tell you it you have cable troubles or starter .

So I got it started and idleing fine. This engine doesn't have an idle-up for starting, poor engineering as its a two-stroke. So I pumped the fuel bulb and immediately pumped the throttle to full a couple times, set it back to neutal and choke it and second try it fired and idled up and settled. Thanks for all the help.

What ever you did must have worked, but pumping the throttle after squeezing the bulb up does absolutely nothing. Your carburators don't have accelerator pumps. They draw fuel by venturi effect only.

you might consider changing controllers. there is one on ebay that has the warm up lever item#220054213725

I'm not sure what controller you have with your motor but all the ones I've seen have had some provision for a neutral warm-up to advance the throttle in neutral... Maybe the handle is broken off? Your motor, if it has the original throttle controller, should have a warm-up lever to the rear of the main handle. If your boat has a built-in throttle box (as was common on Bayliners) should have a means of either pulling the handle outwards to disengage the shift, or a button to push in to disengage. Either will allow you to advance the main handle without engaging forward gear...
