The cover is the original cover that came with the engine the engine is a 1977 70 hp. That makes the engine 32 years old. Over the years the engine had been three colors, original white, then a gold with sparkles(figured this was in during the early 80's then the blue that you see in the photos. There are large holes measuring 3" in diamater on both sides. I fiberglassed the back then filled with bondo. There are also about 25 small .250 holes all over the place. All holes were filled with bondo and sanded. The whole unit then was sanded and primed with etching primer (3 coats were sufficient)

Again I did not go with the original color, but am very pleased with the results.

3 coats of etching primer then wet sanded, then 3 coats of black, wet sanded, then two medium coats of black, wet sanded again (1000 grit)

2 coats of clear coat(wet sanded) then two more coats of clear coat, The original style of decals were not going to match the look that I was going for, so I went with a newer design, one that you see on Etec today.

Tell me what you think so far. Not bad for a first timer......

yes,

lower unit is done. the bottom section of the motor cover is being done now then I will takle the middle section, should be done soon.

so you think the color change is OK

Im just curious, what was the purpose of the holes? Was there a problem with the carbs not getting enough air and the holes were a easy fix without rebuilding the carbs? If so are you now going to have a problem as far as the motor running without the holes? Also im thinking about repainting my 87' Yamaha 115. Im not going to put forth the effort though til i get a compression test done and all is good so that im not waisting my time. Did you do that? I know too manny questions, but i really like what you have done so far. That looks verry awesome!!

I just looked at the deck project you did also... The outboard is gonna be fantastic on you boat! I cant wait to see the finished product.

Can you PM me any info on what mat and poly you used on your deck project please? I'm getting ready for some first time glass work and was just curious.

heres the boat that it is on, it's a 1989 sunbird spl150 this is my first boat, purcased boat and the end of last summer.

If you notice the trailer, I just finished rebuilding it as well.

i will post pictures of the rebuild on the trailer soon

The compression is good on all cylinders, the motor is ugly but runs good, I will be taking it to a shop soon to have all seals replaced, block painted black and link-n-sink done.

Do ya think the holes in the cowl were to get more air into the motor? I know it would let more noise out!!!

i actually don't know. I would tend to believe that they were for aiding in cooling the engine, Everytime that I have taken it out it has run wonderful. And the temp has been way down. The previous owner believed they were there for a exhaust leak, which I have not found. I plan to take the motor to a mechanic as soon as I am done painting to have the head pulled and all the seals replaced and the head painted. I don't have any idea of the cost on a service like this. Does anyone have a idea.

When there is an exhaust leak where the power head bolts to the mid section, it often makes the motor stall due to choking out the air. Holes would help, so there is a good chance that an exhaust leak exists. You will find out running with the holes filled.

I had the power head off my 40hp Evinrude. Its really not hard at all, and all the wiring and stuff on the power head stays on. Its really a matter of removing the lower cowl, disconnecting the throttle, shift, cables, and shift linkage to the lower unit. Took me about two hours to take it off, less time to reinstall. The gasket was about $20. Not too hard, and a bit money saver.

I am 3/4 of the way through with the painting, The preping of the center section of the outboard took forever. I will remount the motor next weekend, I have a CMC PT-130 coming in this week. Over all I am pleased with the results. Tell me what you think... You wouldn't guess that this is a 1977 engine

It's funny; your neighbor with the snazzy new yammy has the same overall engine hood stlye as yours. I guess the OMC style engineers were about 20 years ahead of their time.

The stickers were on there pretty well. But after I was able to figure out a tecnique of how to hold the Razor Blade, everything came off fairly quickly. They were very old and came off in thousands of little pieces that stuck to everything because of the static electricity. I will probably post pictures of it mounted next week.

heres mine its an 86 tho i believe.. illl get a better picture soon but its that with 3 thin white stripes one at the top of the lower unit and two at the bottom of the cowl. where did you get that sticker tho.. i realllly like it
