Hi guys
i have a 2002 115 mercury and the starter drive sticks and it will spin(counterclockwise???) but it won't elevate to catch the flywheel. please help me out because i added grease and it still sticks. the only way it will elevate on the thread is by manipulating the starter drivee with a screw driver. please suggest something, this merc is still a baby.

rodster

sounds like the bendix need some tlc, is it still under warranty, you say its a baby thats why i ask, if so let the dealer worry about it, if not, time to do some testing, hows your battery, good 12.5 vdc, next cables, and good ground, make sure its clean, both ends, , power supply too, like you didnt know that right, is the solenoid clean and corrsion free, next starter, you may have to pull it off and inspect the bendix drive gears, posibly replace.

good luck,
shop manuals are our best friends

Re: starter drive will not elevate

thanks for responding
the warranty is over by 2 weeks. If the battery power is low, would the starter drive fail to elevate even though there's enough power for it to spin? the cables are clean but what do you mean by "both ends"? the solonid is okay because like i said before the starter is spin.

If the battery is low, it possibly won't kick the bendix up hard enough, but the starter will still spin. Make sure battery connections are tight (use pliers on wing nuts if you have them), and clean (no white powdery stuff, or rust etc.). Make sure wires to solenoid are tight, and wire from solenoid to starter is tight, and wire that is connected to starter ground is tight.. That is make sure it's all tight.. :)

If it still happens, you can have the battery load tested, just to make sure it's got the amps as well as the volts.

After that, it may be time to check the starter.

Scott.

rodster

The Mercury Service manual for my much older (1972) motor says to lubricate the starter with 20 weight oil. It cautions not to use to much, which may cause it to gum up.

If your starter was lubed with grease maybe the grease has it caked up, and is causing it to stick???

Try cleaning it up and oiling it.

Good luck,

Gold Bear ;)

Re: starter drive will not elevate

Everyone on this forum has the same advice on this type of problem. Check the voltage and wires. While not BAD advice on a 2002 I doubt it is the culprit. I have the same issude you have with yours. My boat is a 1999 Mercury FORCE 90 HP. The voltage I have is 12.54 on the batt and on the starter. The issue I found is the bendex. Sad it failed after only 5 years. I found (after taking the stater out) that I could spin the gear down and cause it to stick intermittantly. A quick tap on the gold bendex part and it frees right up. Not sure why its happening at such an early age. Could be the pin bearings inside , if thats whats in there :) or dirt or possibly a tight tolerence at the bottom of the shaft where it sits waiting to be kicked up. I used wd-40 and sprayed it liberally, then dried as much up as I could with a paper towel. The I used a lube, (superlube) which is teflon and grafite and silicone mix. It worked for about two days and stuck again. I sprayed wd-40 again and cleaned it out and dryed as much of it as I could. This is when I fould I COULD duplicate the sticking simply by spinning it hard down, by hand, again intermitant. Your fix could be one of two things. 1. clean out the shaft where the gear rotates and slightly lube it with something like triflow, just a little is all, or replace the starter. Good luck, I will be testing mine out again later this week. if its no good this time I will be buying a starter.

I had the same problem, I sprayed WD-40 on it, and has worked great since. Sometimes they just stick and won't fly up. Good luck!

Re: starter drive will not elevate

Im not sure if it this is possible with marine starters but on automotive starters which are basicly the same you can buy just the bendix gear assembly (they call it the starter drive gear). Its pretty easy to change but you do have to take apart the top of the starter motor. If you can get this part and feel like trying the cheap fix i can walk you through the procedure. Again im not sure if it is possible with a marine starter motor or if the part is available but if it is its a lot cheaper than a new starter motor.

Re: starter drive will not elevate

I just want to say thank you all sooo much:D I was having starter issues too and I couldn't figure out why. I went through every complicated thing there was to do and all I had to do was clean my connections at the battery. Worst part about it is I didn't know that until I saw it repeatedly on here. Kudos to the users of Iboats forums.
