Starter Issue?

Broke down in the middle of the lake today. Had to play Hurt by Johnny Cash and hang a white towel for surrender...merc 260 in an 82 cobalt. Engine shut off at idle. An hour or so prior when I tried to start it just clicked so I thought, ok starter. Tapped it with a hammer while my buddy cranked and it started. When it just shut off I tried to do the same thing but it was acting like the battery was dead. It would barely turn over. Luckily, since it was the first time out this season I thought, I should bring my jump box. So I hooked it up. No change. Only for worse. Tapping on the starter and jump box hooked up it just stopped trying to turn the engine over at all. Still clicked though. Jump box said it was fully charged and this thing will jump start a dead diesel. It really sounds like the starter is trying but it just wont turn the engine over. Oil is clean and full. Would the engine lock up like that or is it the starter? Just dont know what else it could be. Any help would be much appreciated. Im thinking I may take the battery, alternator(easy to get to) and starter up to Oreillys and have them tested. The starter is just in such a crummy spot.

Re: Starter Issue?

Maybe to start with you should pull the plugs & see what happens! They are easier to get at, anyway. Check the gear oil, too!

Yea, I could do that. They are easy. I rebuilt this engine to its entirety last year. Nothing more than a marine chevy 350 and thats why I love it. The combo of errors just seemed weird to me.

Re: Starter Issue?

I recomend cleaning the battery cable ends and groung block terminals first. sounds to be like a corroded cable. Then go for the starter. Did you load test the battery?

Re: Starter Issue?

I had removed the battery for winter storage. I put the boat in cave storage here. The cables and all look clean. I will double check the entire wires tomorrow. I have not load tested the battery but when I got back home I put in back on the charger and it was reading like it was dead. Very well could be. But having the jump box connected to it as well SHOULD have bypassed the battery being an issue. Like I said, the box will start a totally dead diesel truck. It has more than enough power to start the merc. But Good thought on checking the wires. Any other thoughts?

I hope you aren't using wing nuts on your battery!

You cannot jump a "dead" (not just discharged) battery. Have it load tested. Free at most auto stores.Verify the starting system by substituting a known good battery.

The battery was tested and it was bad. Got a nice marine deep cycle to replace it. No Change. Im 98% sure the starter is shot too. But Just gotta go through it one thing at a time. All I get it the click.

Re: Starter Issue?

I'm surprised no one else suggested this yet... put a socket and ratchet on the crank pulley bolt and feel how easily the engine turns over. Try remove the spark plugs and do the same thing ... it should be much easier to turn by hand using a socket and ratchet.
