I have a question for someone who knows something about starters on Johnson motors. I have a 95 28hp electric start with the solenoid on the same bracket as the starter. I have power to the main pole, and power to the two small poles on the top of the starter when I turn the key, but the starter does not work. When I bypass the selenoid the starter works fine. I replaced the solenoid today and the same issue. What other problems could I have that prevents the power from getting to the starter? The fuse I could find was good.

make sure your groud battery lead is not broke. and also the neutral saftey switch, could be bad.

Engine FAQs, "Outboard won't start". Do the troubleshooting. Let us know what you find.

Re: Starter issues

It is in your controller, QA. It senses whether the engine is in gear.

The wiring diagram in your OEM Manual shows it.

Re: Starter issues

An update to my problem, I found what was going on, I had a bad ground on the solenoid, I hooked up the ground right and it works like its supposed to. Thanks for your help guys. I have trouble shot the entire electrical system and know a ton more than when I started.
