Update;
1. It is impossible to "walk the gear up" with my fingers, seems like it is stuck with the lower shaft gear. The starter have flats to fit the starter shaft. I am sure the starter runs the larger shaft gear in the bendix. What about WD40?

2.And the new starter spins clockwise. Is it for sure that it should run counterclockwise? It is a new starter from DB electrical.

exploded view of the starter and bendix;

1. The Bendix pinion should move freely on the shaft.
If you turn it clockwise it should rise up the shaft to engage with the ring gear on the flywheel.

2. In operation the motor itself should spin clockwise and the pinion shaft anticlockwise, in order to turn the engine clockwise.

Ok, thanks.

Then I probably have to take off the spinwheel covers, if not WD40 could help. I had hoped I did not have to do it - afraid of destroying something.

Do you have a description for taking off the covers? The manual does not tell anything about these covers, it only shoes how to take off the spinning wheel.

I thought you said the large lower gear on the bendix shaft was stuck tight?
I have changed the starter, but it only spins, it will not engage the bendix drive. The large, lower toothwheel of the bendix drive did not move when I took out the starter
Your spinning directions are correct.
When you turn the key to start does the bendix spin or not?

think there are some terminology issues. The "bendix" gear is the gear that engages the flywheel, up at the top of the shaft with the pinion gear at the base (the large toothed gear). That top gear is the one that spins freely (rotates up to the top of the shaft by centrifugal force, and is kicked back down by the clockwise spinning of the flywheel when the engine starts.)

Actually the shaft rotates causing the bendix to rise due to inertia, gotta keep you on your toes oldboat.:lol:

will stand corrected -- inertia always good....

lots of possibilities yet on that starter issue, I think. Might be a problem with the drive gear, contact with that pinion gear, maybe mounting/remounting of the starter. Not sure. Curious. Not sure either the drive or pinion gears could normally be moved by hand.

edit. starter a candidate for shimming, possibly?

The motor has been under water some years ago, and it was impossible to get the optical timing wheel off without breaking it. Once the flywheel cover was off, I was able to take out the bendix. Put it in gasolin and dried it. Used two stroke oil as lubricant. When reassembled, the starter engaged at once. Have to buy a new timing Wheel.

Thanks for your help
