Just rebuilt my 3.8 V6 omc and tried to turn it over yesterday but the starter made a noise and didnt turn the motor. The noise is a continuous fairly loud "clicking" sound at about 5 clicks per second. The engine is a little tight from new bearing and pistons etc but I can turn it by hand (without tools - levers etc) using the crank pulley.
I have had two suggestions so far - its the starter clutch slipping or its the solenoid dropping in and out because its not getting enough power
I tend to favour the latter as I was trying to jump start it from my van using some long jump leads and even though I connected the jump leads to the engine and main starter terminal I suspect I was dropping too many volts across the connections. As it was the end of the day, didnt have croc clips to attach the voltmeter and couldnt reach the starter switch, I decided to pack up and wait till next weekend to have another go.

What are your thoughts - battery/connections or starter drive clutch?
