Starter not engaging

Just picked up a 1984, Johnson 150hp that hasn't been running in 5+ years. Hooked up jumper cables from a battery directly to the starter and ground. Sprayed the bendix shaft with spray oil and silicone. The bendix initially engaged with the flywheel but would do so slowly, not enough to start the motor. Took the starter off and jumped it and it seemed to spin with high rpm's. Put it back on the motor and cannot get it to engage with the flywheel. It just spins freely at a high rpm rate. Thoughts on why it won't engage with the flywheel? Thanks as always!

If you hook up the jumper cables backward, the motor will spin the wrong way and not engage the bendix.

I'll take the starter apart and do an inspection. The cables were not hooked up backwards. Thanks for your replies. I'll keep you updated.

If it is a permanent magnet starter, it must be put back together with the magnet in the same orientation, or it will run backward. It makes sense to match mark the ends to the center magnet.
