Re: Starter or timing issue???

No...I expect it to not kickback when set at 10* Before TDC....but since that isn't happening, I am trying to figure out why it starts better at 8* AfterTDC. In other words it runs great on the muffs and starts horrible with it set at 10* btdc...starts like it should but runs terrible at 8* atdc. All the while I get no advance from the ignition module and low voltage at the timing lead...

Why would you even think of going to 8? ATDC. Back it back down to ?8 BTDC and see how it works. Besides, 8 is what the manual calls for, not 10.

No worries, I will verify the plug wire firing order tomorrow. I noticed when I went to time it that the light didnt want to read the #1 plug wire. It picked up the #4 wire fine. When I finally got it to read it was sparatic when it would pick up the #1 plug wire. The timing mark never moved so I assumed it was just a poor contact on the incuctive pickup. The exhaust sounds like there is a miss but I assumed it was due to the exhaust and water setup on the muffs. Coukd it be a bad cap or wire issue?

It sure sounds like a firing order or timing issue. Why did you go to the #4 wire with the timing light? Cyl#4 is not close to Cyl#1 and this just seems odd? I'm sure you know, but you must set timing from the #1cyl and assuming it's a sterndrive #1 will be the front cylinder on the port side (left facing the front of the boat).

Don, You are correct, the manual calls for 8*, the engine cover label says 10*...either way two degrees should not cause it to kickback while starting...I have tried it at 8* today as I started at 10* BTDC and worked my way down every two degrees untill I went to 8*ATDC only to see if the timing is causing the kickback and hard starting. At 8*BTDC it is kicking back at what seems every 90* and you have to crank and crank for it to fire off....When it is at 8* ATDC it cranks without kicking and starts almost instantly like a chevy v8 should.

Boatguya1-I tried to read the #4 wire just to verify my timing light was reading the wires...

Don, any thoughts on the knock module and low voltage on the timing lead? The engine was underwater at one time...could it have taken out the knock module and ignition module?

Pardon me if I am completely off base, but:
If this engine has a vibration dampner, any chance the outer ring has slipped.

No problem Eddy, It could have slipped...when I was reassembling the short block everything lined up at 0* TDC on #1. I just reset the valve lash from the initial breakin and the balancer seemed to match TDC on #1. What I don't get is why the it will time in base mode and when returned then to normal mode the idle sounds great and the throttle is snappy. But when I go to start it, it is hard to start and kicks like crazy. When I put my timing light on it and revved up it up to 1750 rpm the timing was at 4* BTDC...it bounced around a little but for the most part it stayed at 4*. I know it won't be at full advance but it should have been off the timing mark. I unplugged the knock module with the engine off and then started it to check voltage to the module with it running and it made no difference at all, I unplugged the knock sensor and no change. It seems like the timing is getting advanced during startup...is this possible? Could it be a combination of the knock and ICM? Does the timing lead voltage have any correlation to ignition timing?
