hey guys .... I've been rebuilding a project motor of mine 1984 3-cyl suzuki 50hp .... now the problem I have is that when the motor starts, (it normally starts on the end of the rope) the high compression pulls the rope back with quite a force, and then the coil hooks out and the rope stayes out, then I have to take off the starter assembly and re-wind the whole thing, what can I do so this doesn't happen? ... it is driving me nuts ..... if I make the rope longer so that when it hits the final compression when it starts it still has a bit of rope, or what does anyone suggest? anyone ever had a problem like this? ....

Rope start units on any type of engine are the most abused mechanical components known to man. People tend to just grab it and yank. Pulling the rope to the end of ifs travel really stresses some fairly delicate parts. You have two options and you should practice both. First, pull the rope gently until you feel compression. Then give it a tug -- but don't run to the other end of the boat. If the engine is tuned you should not have to pull out the entire length of rope to start the engine. Another bad habit is to let the rope snap back in. Keep a grip on the rope and guide it back. That sudden snap can break things. In your case, adding the extra bit of rope should help.

Thanx silvertip, you see my rope is very short and the compression very high so I do pull it gently when it gets compression and then lightly pull it to swing, and then ... there you go motor starts the lean sneeze pulles hard and then the rope stayes out .... i'll try making the rope longer and see what happens ....
