well ill post a vid tomorrow. but this is what i think. my starter is crapping out. over the past season or two. my engine starts like is darn near seized. wooooop. wooop. getting worse too. tonight i wasnt sure if it was gonna start at all. and its s new battery and was at full charge when i left for the lake. all connections are good. just went through some wireing not a couple weeks back so i know it aint that. also im hearing some squaking noises now as it sloooowly turns over. sounds like a dead battery right after a charge. and the squaks. sound like anything fimilliar??? it used to turn over quite fast. now with a good battery it sounds like it aint gonna start at the ramp most times. after its warmed up it starts a lil better but every crank starts out real slow. and picks up a tad as it starts. this is a 1989 50hp us marine force. far as i know starter is orig.

this is in june with a new battery. do they loose there umph when going bad??

acts like motor does when its hot or when batteries are dead but this is when its cold and full charge..

really struggles to start the motor.

First,do a compression test???
Then remove the starter and clean it.
The pic is a handy little thing I made from an old liscence plate.
It holds the brushes in place.
Easy to do.
Double check all connection, the grounds too.
The cable in good shape? It's old and possibly a weak spot.

well the battery terminals wasnt corroded or obvoiusly coated with anything but just the dirt and rust was enough to hinder the current. seems to have helped. think tomorrow oll go through all the terminals and wire brush the studs and nuts and wite terminals just so its all done..

The pics are from a supposedly GOOD starter.

The battery,load test it??
Harbor Freight sells load testers $15-25 They sell comp testers too.Get a good'n
Pull the plugs and try to turn over.
Do a compression test.Remove both plugs.
Low comp on 1 cylinder will do that too.
Clean the starter.VERY easy to do.

The oil ok in the lower unit?
I've seen the bearings go bad and sieze and it would stop the motor from turning??

the motor runs great. havent had any power issues or ideling problems at all. just the start up. the fluid in lower was changed a couple months back and it didnt change anything. the starter has been like this all season. i have a compression tester. i can check that too just to see, i havent done it even after i changed head gasket years back. i dought thats any issue. it made a huge difference when i cleaned the terminals. i got some electrical solder tonight. im gonna acid clean the wires and terminal where they are cripmed and dry with torch and fill it gaps down in it with solder and clean all the remaining connections tomorrow. i wont break open the starter unless i have to. be a winter project if it still has any issues.

i had to put in a clutch dog back in 06ish. all the bearings and gears were in great shape. only issues is the start up. after it fires everythings working 100%.

Re: starter shooting craps???

all that UMPH is back. its amazing. another one of them times where having something tight doesnt necessarly mean it getting a good connection. got the treminals all acid washed to bare copper. soldered the terminals and coated the bare areas with liquid electrical tape. cleaned off the battery terminal with the embry cloth. if my flywheel wasnt bolted on it would be a ufo.. just a thin layer of exposure buildup that was just enough to turn the copper black was all it took to cause this.

now i see what that liscense plate tool is for. the innards of the starter looks close to the innards of a minn kota troller i had apart fixing last week. the liscense plate holds them 4 electro magnets (brushes) in while the shaft slides in the slot. got ya. on the minn kota there were 2 on either side of the copper conductors. and spring loaded they were proving impossibe to hold while i put the prop shaft in and bolt back up. i had to slide them in and use a twist tie to hold the copper conductor wire in a loop and pull them out and bend tie over the edge of the motor housing. but the loops had to be open so when it was togather i could pull the ties out to seal up the housing. good old redneck ingeinuity. ill keep that in my mental file folder when i clean this out this winter.

Good for you, catfish. Just proves the old "never assume anything" saying.

Have you ever thought about installing a master electrical terminal block? Seems like you've got a lot of wires running to that battery, and I assume a lot of inline fuses too. Those boxes, including a grounding strip, can be had for under $100.00 and an hour or so of running wires and voila, you'd be done. That way, when it is time to change the battery, you only have 1 set, maybe 2 sets of wires coming to the battery. Just a thought. Keep catching those fish!

ya great idea. adding lights and leds for night fishing over the years have added up. its not as bad as it looks. some are pigtails for charging. but thats a good idea. might look into that as another off season project.
1 clean starter
2 gulvit the leaks
3 power distribution

its adding up.

i got a 12" red and a 12" green led strips today to add to the bow to make seeing me at night better. adding a couple coats of liquid tape to seal up the bare spots now and ill show the difference it made.
