Starter spins but doesn't engage on 82 Johnson 140

I have an '82 Johnson 140. This season, after getting it out of storage, I turn the key, the starter spins, but doesn't push the engaging gear up to the large geared starting wheel on the top of the motor. What could cause this? Any help would be appreciated greatly! Thanks!

This is caused by a gummy worm gear. Get a can of WD40, and spray it all over the shaft of the starter,while working the shaft gear up and down. Once it is freed-up good, oil it with regular motor oil or 2cycle oil (whatever is on-hand).<br />That's all there is to it.
