Re: starter trouble

Make sure you have good battery connections..I usually touch up my battery terminals and power cables with some very fine (220-400 grit Emory is best) paper if my starter clicks(poor electrical connection, tighten bolts.)..other than that..I am VERY weary off used starters and won't buy them.. over cranking can fry one quickly and without knowing the starters used history, well i assume them dead....with a little shopping around, A new starter can be found for 80-100$ on iboats or ebay and will eliminate the possibility of a bad starter. another note, your original post is unclear...we assume you are hooked up to a good battery anyway. anyway, sounds like a dead battery, battery connection or bad starter in that order. if all connections are sound and clean, battery is charged, and starter still clicks but turns over eventually=bad starter. If starter clicks..try tapping it to advance the solenoid in the brushes..if it turns over, you def. have a bad starter and it is an easy fix=new starter. electronics are not something to buy used IMO, especially something as crucial as a starter. shell out the $$ for a new one and piece of mind. hope this helps, report what you find.

Re: starter trouble

You probably didn't need a new starter at all, cb.

Disconnect and clean all connections of battery cables and inspect the cables for corroded or weak spots.

Re: starter trouble

Remove the plugs and try to turn over by hand.If that works then try the key.J

Re: starter trouble

I went and had the starter tested this afternoon and it is good. Im going to the soloinoid tomorrow but i believe it is bad. I was told when they are clicking that they have gone bad.

Re: starter trouble

clicking is always a sign of low voltage. either bad connection or battery low you battery should read about 12.3 to 12.8

Re: starter trouble

i had the same problem with my force 85. i bought a NEW starter from iboats, real resonable, and a marine battery from wally world, fired right up. was getting voltage to the starter during cranking, but had a weak battery. changed it out and BAM. good to go.

Re: starter trouble

agreed, clicking is a sign of poor connection/low voltage. Clean your terminals with Emory, and if battery caps can be taken off, check battery water for specific gravity, that will let you know the exact condition of the battery. (maintenance free batteries do not have this option, hence maintenance free.)

Re: starter trouble

I cleaned the terminal on the starter and it fired right up.
Thanks
