Starter weak?

My starter even with a new battery seems to be weak. It rolls over the engine ok, enough to start it, but it just sounds like it is running off of a half dead battery when it rolls over the engine. Is it just me thinking it is weak or should it sound strong with a fully charged battery? Would a weak solonoid cause the starter to roll the engine slower than it really should be? My engine is a 1978 2.5L 4cyl.

Check the starter and battery connections to make sure they are all clean. Also, check the starter itself, there is a long bolt that comes out that can be tightened by the nut on it -- that sometimes vibrates loose. Tighten it up -- I put locktite on mine. that should help.

not likely a soleniod can cause the starter to turn slow but it is very common for bad connections to the block and starter to do so. In some cases old starters can draw excessive current and turn slow.

I would check the wires themselves,(fat red & black), after 27 years they could very well corroded themselves......If they get warm during cranking the engine they are getting old & corrosion = resistance = heat........JK
