I bought a starter for a omc Chevy and the guy said they don't make the big ones now they just make the small ones now... He also said the starter will fit a 5.0 and 5.7 but my only problem is that sometimes when I crank the motor the starter grinds so I release key and try again..... When starter cranks the motor, it does not skip or grind but as soon I let go and try again it grinds...... Starter cam with I think a short and long bolt and a gasket.... Also I don't recall the flywheel is missing teeth or its bad and also maybe the starter is for a merc bell housing?????

Re: Starter

You need to rotate the engine with starter off and look at the teeth on the flywheel. The reason it grinds in some places and not in others is because you have bad teeth on your flywheel likely. So, did your old starter grind too?

Just curious where you bought this starter? It sounds like the starter pinion is not releasing from the flywheel once the engine starts.. could be a bad starter . . . could be an alignment problem . . . could be that condition of the teeth on the flywheel . . .

Also, is this a Marine starter? (SAE J1171 compliant)

Re: Starter

To shim the starter, go to an auto electric store. Ask for a starter shim for your engine. They may want to know if your mounting bolts are straight across or staggered. You have to drop the outer bolt and slacken the inner. The shim is notched to go around the inner bolt, but make sure the bolt is in the notch or the shim may rub on the flywheel. There is a specification for the clearance between the gear on the drive and the teeth on the flywheel, but it's almost impossible to check in a car let alone a boat.
