Volvo penta 4.3 gl starter is new but will not engage flywheel making a spinning noise. Had the starter tested still good. Recently on the water turned off engine would not crank back up starter just spinning. Found out that a bolt backed out of the solenoid which caused the solenoid to be loose found bolt tightened back up starter still spinning. Cluless please help!

There are a few things you need to check:

You used new starter bolts right? They have to be starter bolts.
Pull your starter and make sure the bendix gear fully extends.
Check the condition of you flywheel teeth.
Some starters need to be shimmed.

I just took starter off today. Do I need to use new starter bołts when I put it back on? And where can I get them from? I'm assuming the bendix is working properly had it bench tested and it passed. Flywheel looks good and no shims were used

Well, there is a whole debate about reusing them or not. Since you are having an issue, I might consider it. Did you torque the bolts to spec? If the bolts aren't tight, the starter can move and give you the problem you have.

No I have not put the starter back in yet I'm going to check all wire connections there is a new battery in it but might consider getting a new one. Do you know the spec for tourqe?

Auto parts store.

35 lbs torque.

Ok got a new battery hooked everything back up bolted starter on and it engaged and turned over once or twice. Then it just started not engaging and just seems like it's spinning again. Any more ideas?!!
