I replaced the pull rope on the motor and I have a question.
Does the prop turn on these old motors when the rope is pulled.
It is so hard to pull I don't think the rope can hold up.
Or am I missing something?

Sounds like you're missing something. When you pull the rope it should also turn the prop. There is no neutral position on that motor. I'd verify you rebuilt the recoil correctly after replacing the rope.

Re: starting 1971 4hp Johnson

This is my first boat motor so I will be asking some dumb questions.
The starting coil is fine. When I pull the cord it does turn the prop but just seems to be hard to pull.(My age might have something to do with it)
I have to buy a tank and hose for it before I see if it will start. Is this 4W71D a air cooled motor?
Thanks

its water cooled and should not be hard to pull over, try turning the flywheel by hand to see if you can feel any binding..post back.

No binding on flywheel.Later on in the week I will get the fuel hooked up and try to start it.

If the flywheel turns over easily, then there is something wrong with the recoil starter.

With the plugs out the flywheel should turn easily. (clockwise) If the flywheel turns easy then try the pull rope and see if the pull is still difficult. If it is it's the recoil assembly that needs work. Great little motors. Best of luck. Rick.
