Re: starting batteries

Optima is fussy about chargeing compared to a standard lead acid battery and easy to kill that way.

I do very well with a standard dual purpose starting/deepcycle battery like Interstate

tommays

Re: starting batteries

I have always done very well with Nautilus brand dual purpose.Between Kmart and BJs club ,I can usually get one very reasonable.

Re: starting batteries

For a starter battery, I just use a basic one from Wal-mart and then replace it every other year. It might go longer, or a more expensive one probably would, but having a new cheap battery in there regularly seems better than pushing the limits of an expensive one.

Re: starting batteries

I have a Group 24 AC Delco Voyager that is 8 years old and still holds a charge and recharges fast. However I use it as my house battery, VHF, Loran C, GPS, Depth Finder, Accessory lighter pulgs, second bildge pump, interior lights. Got it cheap back when Price Club / Costco carried them.
Keep any good battery charged and if it is not sealed maintain the water level. Charge at least once a month in summer and ever two month in winter and batteries will treat you right. Never leave any battery discharge or it will not last a year. The deeper the discharge and the longer discharge the less time a battery will last.

Re: starting batteries

I always use a battery that suits my tow vehicle, I swap it over every 3 months or so and find I can get 4 - 5 years out of it that way. Seems the thing that kills them the quickest is lack of use!

Re: starting batteries

i've been rotating batteries with my truck. 1 in the truck, the other as boat battery use as starter battery for the i/o, 50hp rude, and trolling motor battery one the 15' lonestar. i want to put a permanent battery in the i/o. i use a lawn mower battery mounted under the bow seats for the am/fm radio. Horsefly, Jacksonville,Fl is a great place to boat, run to the ocean, down to Palatka, Silver Springs, and all the springs off Lake George. plus jax is a beautiful city drifting at night in tne vast St. Johns River.

Daddy... No matter what you buy, 5 years is average life unless you buy some cheapo-no-name. Keep that in mind. 650 cranking amps should be plenty.

Re: starting batteries

Here’s a link which leads to many other links with just about anything you may want to know about batteries. http://www.uuhome.de/william.darden/ . I had a buddy who worked at a battery plant and he told me a simple way to pick a good battery besides picking one for the proper application (deep cycle, marine, starting, amps, etc…) when you pick the thing up and it feels like it weighs a ton your getting a good battery, if you think wow this things nice and light and it will be easy to handle, put it back. It was not uncommon for them to put many different labels on the same battery and when you went to the store the same one was also priced differently according to the label.
