The terms used to describe things over the Internet are very important, those aren't battery cables, battery cables go from the battery to the motor.

Let's get back to the basics. The "battery cables" go directly from the battery to the motor, they are the thick heavy wires, typically two wires together.

The "wires" that go to the control box do two things, they provide a small amount of power to a few gauges (if there are any) and activate the starter solenoid, that's it. There is no high load associated with control box.

No wires should get hot when starting the motor unless it's wired incorrectly or the solenoid is bad.

From what I can tell the positive battery cable would go to the top pick on the solenoid, opposite of the cable that goes to the starter. And the ground goes to the powerhead (I will probably put it under one of the starter's bolts). How does that sound? From what I can tell, the wires that I have connected to the battery right now should not be connected to the battery. Where then should they go? Nowhere? There used to be a black and a red wire coming out of the control box the positive cable went to one yellow wire on the rectifier located on the bus bar , and the other went to bus bar ground. First Image is ground on bus bar. Second image is Positive battery cable connection in control box. Third image is 'control box ground' where the battery ground cable connects to the bus bar ground cable. Fourth image is the positive cable connection on bus bar located near the silver rectifier.

Hey guys, just found out it was a tachometer lead with a ground wire! Haha! Now my tachometer has 14 gauge wire! I will buy 'real' battery cables today. Thank you for all the help!
