Starting Issues Ocean Runner 150

Hello,
I have an oceanrunner 150 carbed and I'm having issues starting. Everytime I turn the key the voltage at the power pack drops to 10 volts on two batteries with fresh charge. The starter turns the engine fine. I have new powerpack, battery, and regulator. I don't know why the voltage is dropping so much at the yellow and red wire of the power pack. Can anyone please help me.

Check and clean all connections. Check condition of all the cables. Replace as needed.

Thank you for the response. I have checked all the connectors and grounds, everything seems to be good to go. Whats the chance of the cylonade or starting causing that issue?

Solenoid will either work or it wont as far as I know.

Re: Starting Issues Ocean Runner 150

Starter spins the engine like a top, one of the batterys is brand new. The Yellow/Red wire that comes form the starter switch not onyl send voltage to the started seloniod, but it also sends the voltage to the power pack. Enough to keep it below 11 volts (10.5-10.3v) once in a blue moon the engine will pop, but we just cant figure it out. If we measure voltage from the batts directly, we get 11.6ish while cranking. Why would johnson make the coil pack not trigger with such a high voltage requirement, my thought is it would be more likely to leave you stranded if your battery is a bit low.

BTW, im frankmenendez's son

You need 300 + RPM for the motor to fire up.

Battery has nothing [edit] (directly) to do with the powerpack. Theoretically you can start the engine with a rope and no battery (if you are strong enough).

Are you using the primer solenoid (pushing the key in) while cranking?

Re: Starting Issues Ocean Runner 150

at start up the powerpack needs the power to turn on the optical ignition circuitry.

there is no rope starting on this baby.

when cranking the voltage at the starter solenoid is the same as at the battery?

you might have a voltage drop killing the optical eye.
its probably a bad connection

Well, seems like we foud the issue with the voltage out, bad ground. But it seems the engine needs to have its factory timming reset, is that fairly easy to do on this engine?

That would be a link and sync... Do a search for the Joe Reeves method. It works great and the engine does not neeed to be running to time it. I have used it with with great success on my 1995 150's with OIS.

Cheers! Richard
