I have been working on my boat and motor getting it ready to attempt to start ( on the weekend when ive got all day ) i am going to start it in a barrel , i have checked the normal things ie plugs, contacts , new bulb and fuel hose , gearbox oil and changed out my morse cables . I have never started and outboard engine before ( this is my first boat ) am i was wonder what are the first steps that i should do ? , it is an electric start , with a choke button next to it .

i am gonna run it at 50/1 ratio when i am up running should i run it about 40/1 to start up for the first time ? ( is has not run for a about a year )

Also on engine just on top of the steering cables facing the front of the boat there is a little turn handle that will turn left 90 deg and back ?? anyone know that this is ?

Thanks for helping out on here you guys are great i am from England and dont really know any people over here who to ask ! you guys seem the pro's

Hi Danny....running it at 40:1 for the first time won't hurt....maybe just enough in the fuel can to get it running and then switch to 50:1.

The lever is a release lever to allow the engine to be raised up. You should run the engine with the lever in the release position. This will let the engine swing up in case any under water obstruction is encountered. Better to let the engine kick up than lose a lower unit.

Once running, check the engine temp after it has been running a while and watch the exhaust releif ports. You should get a misty spray out of them which may pick up a little once the t-stat opens.

Do you start it with the throttle in the start position or no throttle at all? , also is ok to run in forward and reverse as well as neutral ?

Start with the throttle in the start position, in neutral. You can run it in forward or reverse but beware, the prop will quickly empty the barrel of water and the water pump will be running dry - very bad.

danny start procedure. connect gas line arrow on bulb pointing toward motor.. pump bulb until hard, if you the 1 handle control lift fast idle lever all the wat up, if 2 handle control move throttle lever all the way forward. activate choke button listen for a click to be sure it is working. hold choke button , turn key and hopefully start. you may have to play with the choke button to keep it running lower throttle speed. it is best to keep the water running into the barrel to replenish lost water. good luck.
