Hi,
I have a 125 1989 Force outboard that does not start easy.
When the engine is started it runs great and when it is warm it starts up easy as well.
I do have a manual but can not really find help with this problem.
I already replaced the spark plugs (what type is the best one to put in).
Who can push me into the right direction?
Thanks,

Robert

Are you new to boating?

If so, pushing in the key while you start the engine will choke the engine. This will get more fuel in the motor and make it easier to start.

There is also a way to increase the throttle without going in gear. This helps the motor start while cold.

I am using this (my first) boat since last summer.
How long should i choke for? i flooded it before. I adjusted the idle screws following the book but it didnt change much.

You need to pull the gearshift handle OUT, then forward (it will be out of gear. Thats the fast idle). Have you done that?
You push the key in for choke.

Re: Starting Problem 125 1989 Force

When i bought the new spark plugs, just replaced what was in there.
Now that i checked the book it tells me it should be
NGK BUHX instead of the BUHW.
I took the spark plugs out and they are pretty dirty (black greasy) already, could that be from having the wrong spark plugs?
I will buy the right spark plugs tomorrow and see what that does.

Thanks for the tips! i never thought about the fast idle to start it up.

Re: Starting Problem 125 1989 Force

I have an 86 125 and the best way I found to start it is to push the key in for about 3 seconds while turning it and then holding it turned and not pushing it in. In other words i choke it for 3 seconds and then I let is start unchoked. Works every time. if I choke it too long I get gas dumping out of my motor.
good luck

Re: Starting Problem 125 1989 Force

Putting in the right spark plug NGK BUHX really helped.
I also renewed the connectors (Lugs) to the Battery.

Thanks for all the tips guys!
