starting problem..

i have a 84 invader with the aq 125 b 4cyl volvo /270 out drive. i have an intermittent starting problem i need advise on. i originally thought it was the neutral safety switch as it would not turn over. i would have to put the gear selector in neutral and pull the lever all the way towards reverse then the starter would engage. before that no click no anything. i then bypassed the neutral safety switch and had the same thing happen again. again, put the lever in neutral and pulled it all the way back and it starts at full throttle though. is there a switch on the trans linkage or some other lock out mech? thanks kc

i have read this and why it is helpful in some situations it doesnt tell me why it would still start with the leaver pulled all the way down towards reverse. it only happens intemittantly so i will have to wait til i am on the water again for the test light. thought maybe there was a switch on the trans. the neutral safety has been emporarily bypassed..

That makes no sense. If you are in N, in ANY position, it should start.
When it starts like this, does it start at a high rpm because of the throttle position?

When it runs, is N where it is supposed to be? And forward and reverse are all normal too?

nope. there is only: ignition switch- fuse panel- N switch- relay- solenoid- starter

If you bypassed the N switch and are still having problems then it must not have been the problem.

Have you jumped it at the solenoid? Either with a remote starter switch or just shorting the hot terminal with the start terminal?

This is an older boat, take a wire brush to the fuse terminal contacts. The years of exposure can create a bad contact surface that will give you intermittent electrical problems.

Test the relay with a light probe. Test the ignition switch with a light probe. You have already bypassed the N switch so that must not be it.

You should just need a test light and 20 minutes to figure this out. Good luck.
