can someone tell me the diffience between a deep cycle trolling motor battery and a starting/deepcycle battery? also, i have a johnson 9.9 with electric start. how much does this recharge my trolling motor battery. what would be the best battery and charger to get and what would be a better set up for my boat. also, can i plug a minkota charger into my trolling motor plug in the front of my boat without any problems such as burning up my system? thanks.

Re: starting/trolling motor battery

1. The combination battery can supply high amps for starting a big engine and can also tolerate deep discharge.

2. Don't know what the 9.9 alternator output is, but it isn't very much, certainly not enough to recharge a lot of troller use.

3. The best value in my opinion is the Everstart Marine Maxx. The MinnKota charger is a good option, and you can plug it in to the troller plug with no problems.

Re: starting/trolling motor battery

A combination starting/deep cycle (also called a dual purpose) isn't as good at starting as a standard starting battery, nor is it as good at deep cycling as a standard deep cycle. It does do both jobs fairly well however. In your application either a portable charger or an on-board charger can be used to charge the battery. Yes, you can plug your charger into the trolling motor plug. Just make sure you have polarity correct. An on-board charger is permanently connected to the battery so all you need to do is plug in at the dock (or your garage if at home). Your engine probably has a 4 or 5 amp output which would take forever to fully charge a battery. If would be ok to keep a separate starting battery topped off as it doesn't get discharged as much as a trolling battery would.
