Re: Starts and dies problem

Hello Skydive, I yet have solved this problem and I could really use your input. All systems are go all the way to the coil. Got another brand new coil and still no spark from it. According to the wiring diagram there is a tachometer amplifier in line could this prevent coil from not sparking and also someone suggested that possibly / maybe the alternator! Any thoughts?

Re: Starts and dies problem

Hello Anyone, Feel free to jump in!!!!!!!!! I tested the coil tonight for spark and It was intermittent as to say a few times I got spark and a few times I didn't by grounding coil. Even when I did get spark it seemed to be weak to me. This is a brand new coil from IBOAtS Volvo penta genuine parts that I installed tonight. It seems as many people viewing this thread I may not be the only one having this problem and might be useful in the future. So anyone, anybody, jump in and help brainstorm! Thanks

Re: Starts and dies problem

Thanks BruceB58, In performing the spark test the only wire I had on the coil was the 12 Volt wire on the positive side of coil. But I will go over the Information you provided and continue to check things out. Thank you for taking the time to help.

Re: Starts and dies problem

Here is an update for all those that are interested. Just because it's new doesn't mean it's good! I have worked and worked on this problem and I have gone through 2 brand new coils and a New ignition module oem style for my distributor. No matter what test I did all still pointed to the same area and same problem. I called the people who actually made my distributor and got an ignitor and coil from them. Put it in tonight ( about 15 minutes of work.) and BAM!!!!! starts and runs better than it ever has. Also I wanted to say that the engine seems to start on the first go around. It starts better than a brand new car. I would tell you who I got it from but I am not sure that I can advertise on the forum for them. If any one is interested in an old engine module for their boat I would suggest find out who the maker is of your distributor and get model number off plate and call them direct to find out which ignitor and model you need for your distributor. What a difference new technology is compared to the old original parts. Anyway I just thought I would let everyone know that it is up and running great.

Re: Starts and dies problem

The distributor is made by Prestolite. A company called Pertronix provided all the information needed for the Coil and Ignitor. I chose to go with the Ignitor I and Flamethrower coil. However they are a manufacturer, So I had used JEGS to order the part's. JEGS had it shipped directly from Pertronix to my door within 2 days. I am so impressed with the results that I had to try it again last night. I am here to tell you that you barely touch the key and Bam it fires up. Nothing like before where the engine would turn over 2 or 3 times then fire. I would tend to say that the engine fires on contact with the first spark. I am serious when I tell you that it starts better than a brand new boat. If anyone is having problems starting their boat or hard starting due to coil or ignition this is a fairly cheap route and you would not regret it.
