HI
You guys have been a great help. Well after some suggestions from you I got it running. But when I start it, it starts in gear. I have the motor in a large garbage can when I start it and you can see the water turning hard. I can't really see the prop but I am sure it is turning. The cables are all attached. How do I adjust the cables to get it in neutral? As I said before it was worked on by someone who knew as much as I did. Nothing. It is a 55hp Chrysler 1971 model 557HC serial 3188.

I can't be too specific but unhook the cables and see if it will shift to nerutral.
It may be difficult to shift when off.You might have to rotate the prop.
Figure out forward and neutral if it works without the cable.then see if you can adjust cable to match the positions.

Re: starts in gear

Your prop might be turning but the turbulence you are seeing could be exhaust. With the motor off use your finger to turn the prop in both directions. If it spins freely then the motor is in neutral and you are seeing exhaust. When you get your problems resolved please post those results back on these threads you start. People do searches and none of your posts tell anyone what the final solution was.

Eurolarva, you are right, again. I checked the prop and it spinned freely with my finger turning it in both directions. It was in neutral all the time. The churning was the exhaust. Can't thank you guys and this forum enough.
