I have been trying to do a link and sync on my 1988 25 hp johnson i did the static timming test then put the boat in the water and did the wot timming test at full throttle here is where i have a few questions #1 do i need to adjust the carb and the throttle control arm before a set the timming or set the timming first #2 i have several manuals for this motor and they all say something different where are you supposed to set the cam follower and the cam roller one book says that it is supposed to start opening after the roller passes the second mark one says it is supposed to be in the center and one says open at the first mark i know that this step is important so i need to know the right spot #3 the books also are different on where the stationary timming mark is located at one says its on the right side if looking at it from front and one book says it is front and center right above the starter handle but when you put a timming light on the motor it only stops the mark on the side of the motor #4 how do you set the wot timming if the motor wont run at wot how do you make it run wot thanks again CD

Re: Stationary timming mark

Wish I could help with specific answers but I do not know much about your engine. Mine is a bit older but the steps may be the same, plus I have two carbs so you do not have to do the link and sync step.
Stat with Throttle cam adjustment. For mine the roller just touches the cam at the first mark (centered).

Then set timing. Change with idle adjustment screw until timing is to spec for idle and then shut off engine. Adjust yoke (or whatever you have) until the cam roller lines back up with the line on the cam.

To set WOT see post here under FAQ's section http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=31
look for the Joe Reeve's WOT timing procedure.

As for the different manuals and different instructions, toss them out and get an OEM manual. I tried Seloc and Clymers and both had mistakes (including timing settings). Plus if you don't know exactly what you are doing, some information is confusing (It was for me). Spend a few bucks on the 'Real" manual and save yourself tons of headaches in the future. Those other manuals make good coasters or door stops.
