I've searched this site and looked in my manual and can't find info I'm looking for.Hoping someone here can help?
I tested the stator with and with out yellow wires hooked up to rectifier and got a negative reading and some lights on my tester came on, that i don't know what they mean? The tester is a [INNOVA 3320]ASE certified tester. If anyone has 1 of these maybe you know what they mean? The lights are as follows,a check mark,? mark, and a X.When i tested the stator while motor was running i got a negative reading[don't remember the #'s] and the ? mark and X lit up.I'm assuming the X lighting up is not good and have no idea what the ? means, read all through the manual for tester it never mentions these lights and what they mean.
My other ? is.From what I've read in my manual it says that the stator for my motor charges the battery and runs the ignition,is this right? If this is so, then can it quit charging but still run the ignition? If the stator is bad can it or will it destroy my rectifier?

Thanks for any info!

Re: Stator [1995 rude 88hp]

Stators are made with two sets of coils. One coilset charges the battery the other coilset powers the ignition system. They are independent systems, not connected to each other, so either can fail while the other system is OK. Are you having issues with the running of the engine, or the charging system? Typically when checking stators, you need the factory manual and a "peak-reading" voltmeter (or an adaptor for a common household meter.)

Re: Stator [1995 rude 88hp]

I am having trouble with both charging and running.Charging has been an issue the whole time, and it ran great till the otherday.Last thursday i rebuilt the fuel pump, took the boat for a ride and ran great, had no problems at all idleing.as a matter of fact i let it sit and idle for atleast 20 minutes and it never missed a beat.
Friday i went back out and it didn't want to idle, unless i high idled it at between 1500 and 2000 rpm's,anything lower it would spit and cough, this i why i think the stator is going bad on the ignition side.Any thoughts on what to check next?

I'd take an inductive timing light and a friend out the next time you go boating. When the engine starts to act up, put the timing light on each plug wire and check the light flashes. You are want to see strong, constant flashes. It will show misses or weak flashes. Hopefully this will tell you the condition of the ignition system when the boat is planing or idling. You need to see at least 150 volts output from the stator on that engine-see your OEM manual.
