stator problem?

Hi,
I had a new authentic stator put onto my Mariner outboard 175hp -1 1/2 yrs ago. I went out onto the Gulf last week, motor quit, and I fortunately got back in. My boat mechanic (just uses authentic new parts....mercury) is fixing it and says my motor needs a new stator again? I called Mercury and they said that the only function for the stator is as a charging system. My mechanic says that I need the stator in order to make my 3 cylinders fire up....they're dead right now. I also had the 2 switch boxes replaced when I had the stator replaced. My compression is also right up. Who is trying to fleece me on this problem? Does the stator do more than work as a charger?

Just makes one wonder what gets the switchbox to work,if it's not the stator?

DHP {tongue in cheek)

Re: stator problem?

Well, I guess I'll just have to grin and bare this new $330.00 charge, I'm just wondering if I can't send my almost new stator in to mercury and have them test it? Then maybe I can get some bucks back from the service center where I got it repaired.

Re: stator problem?

While parts warrantee is usually 90 days, send the stator back to Merc. The shipping won't be all that much.Include ALL documentation you have and STRESS you are using a dealer who ONLY uses original parts. It can't hurt. And tell them these ignition parts are expensive for short duration. If nothing else they may have suggestions to keep this from reoccurring.
Grnerally if a solid state unit works for three months it has no defects. But obviously you have an ongoing problem.
DHP

Re: stator problem?

There is something wrong with this picture. There are plenty of merc motors out there that were hard starting or ran erratic because of bad stators. Merc knows this and I don't understand why they said the stator didn't cause any problems (other than charging) if defective. It's not like stator problems are rare with older mercs.

Re: stator problem?

Yankanuk,,,

This is just my opinion, but I think it's worth checking out.... You have a symptom that (IMO) is worth checking out further, unless you fully have trust in you mechanic....

A totally dead bank of cylinders, could easily be a switchbox failure just as much as a stator. Your stator has a high speed and a low speed winding for voltage generation to the boxes... If one winding fails, I believe that there is still a good chance that some voltage will reach both banks... A failed winding can easily reveal a week spark condition more that a totally absent spark (on one bank anyway). If you have no sprark it makes me wonder....

To confirm what's going on, switch the stator leads at the top of the switchboxes from one to the other. If the no-spark (or weak spark) condition switches from one bank to another, you will know that it's the stator.. If it doesn't it's one of the switchboxes... Easy test.
The leads are red & blue on one box and red-white & blue-white on the other... Let us know..
