Re: Stator Voltage

Ah, that makes sense, thank you Seahorse. I wasn't trying to nitpick you, but I'm also trouble shooting a Johnson electrical system right now, so the information could prove useful.

Nitsug,

Start a new thread with your make, model, and year and tell us what kind of electrical problem that you have.

Re: Stator Voltage

The AC voltage on the 2 yellow wires will need to be well above 12 volts AC, probley close to 18 volts at idle, with peak reading meter. If you are only getting 12.7 DC volts at 4500 rpms, the stator or wiring is bad. You said you changed rectifier right, or the meter you are using is bad.

Re: Stator Voltage

Actually, a full wave bridge rectifier will not produce a 'pulsating DC' voltage. If the
"rectifier" used only one diode, then you would have pulsating DC because that
single diode would be blocking only one half of the A/C wave form coming into the
rectifier. Since these rectifiers have 4 diodes (a Full Wave Bridge), you get smooth
DC. There may be a small DC ripple voltage, but not enough to mention. The
rectifiers job is to convert A/C wave form into Direct current. There is no voltage
regulation. The more A/C voltage to put in, the more DC voltage you get out. The
'size' of the diodes themselves determines the current capacity of the rectifier.
Drawing too much current thru the rectifier can destroy one or more of the diodes.
These diodes act more like fuses in this case. It bewilders me as to why they don't
put an inline fuse on the output of the rectifier to limit the max current and protect the
rectifier itself. I guess they wouldn't be selling many replacements if they did that. ;)

Re: Stator Voltage

Yes, I have changed rectifier and tested with two different neters. Both show about 7.5 to 7.7 volts ac. Guess it is time for a new stator.

Thanks,
